Amelia E. Duran

Over the last 19 years, Amelia E. Duran, has sought to create positive social and cultural impacts in her community as an organizer, curator, mixed-medium contemporary installation artist and writer. Rooted in popular education models that uplift creative self-expressions based on her lived experience growing up in an urban context both in Detroit and Santiago Chile, she uses them as tools to develop outlets that encourage others to collectively challenge current socio-political norms, hierarchies, and oppressive structures that keep much of our communities disenfranchised.

Proud of her Chilena-Latina American heritage and language she strives to use them as inspiration to fight the gradual assimilation processes felt growing up in diaspora, which often promote a loss of language, tradition and culture. She graduated from Wayne State University with a B.A. in Political Science and History and is currently the Co-Director of Garage Cultural. Her installations have been exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Arts and various other venues throughout the city.
